Match Preview; Corsham Town

Match Preview; Corsham Town

Club Admin22 Mar - 09:57

Danny Janes' side are back at the Recruit 12 Community Stadium this afternoon where they'll welcome Corsham Town.

The Plums, fresh from an impressive display at Mangotsfield United last weekend, will welcome a somewhat revived Corsham side for a Hellenic League fixture.

Similar to Mangotsfield last Saturday, today's tie is a rearranged fixture with the Recruit 12 Community Stadium pitch having standing water on it when the fixture was originally set to be played.

The two sides couldn't have had much more of a different season; The Quarrymen took off like a steam train at the start of the campaign, winning nine and drawing one of their opening ten Hellenic League games. Within that was a 1 - 0 win over Danny Janes' side back in September, a first half penalty enough to separate the two sides and extend Corsham's winning run at the time.

Following that run came eight straight league defeats for The Quarrymen, a run that saw them plummet in the league table and leave management duo Ashley Morgan and Marvin Brown the task of steadying the ship.

It'll be two very different sides to the two that competed in the 1 - 0 Corsham win back in September. Just seven of Pershore's squad that day remain at the Football Club, whilst just two of Corsham's side that day featured in their last game against Slimbridge AFC.

Recent signing, Ross Staley, will be expected to make his third appearance for Corsham Town tomorrow afternoon. The midfielder has joined The Quarrymen from Yate Town, adding plenty of experience to Corsham's ranks. Now 30, Staley has featured for a number of high profile Non-League clubs including Hereford, Taunton Town and Frome Town. Whilst predominantly a wide player, left-footed Ross can also play just inbehind the front men and will be one that'll drive Corsham's attacks.

They'll be a reliance on Theo Jeremy on the goals front from the visitors, Theo averages just shy of a goal every other game since joining in January from Yate Town. The exciting winger was on trial with Bristol City at the end of 2023 and lists Keynsham Town and Tiverton Town within his former clubs.

Loan signing, Liban Ibrahim, will be another one for The Plums to watch. Liban joined Corsham Town on loan from Swindon Supermarine and has been handed the captains armband. A box to box midfielder that adds plenty of experience to a youthful Quarrymen.

Leading the line for Corsham, we expect, will be Raphael Oppong. The striker joined from Larkhall Athletic in the January following a hugely successful spell with Bradford Town where he scored sixteen goals in twenty-one games. Oppong is a striker with good movement but also the ability to link up play and bring others into play around him.

It'll be a game where both sides are playing for, 'finish as high as we can' - what that'll mean in terms of the quality will remain to be seen on a pitch that'll no doubt be lively at the Recruit 12 Community Stadium.

Having gone out of the Challenge Cup away at Roman Glass, it's just the five league games to go for The Quarrymen, meanwhile The Plums will travel to Ludlow Town on Tuesday evening for a Quarter Final tie in the Challenge Cup.

Janes will again look to patch up his side this afternoon because whilst Sacha Everard got through training, they'll be doubts on whether he is ready to start. Jake Donnelly also got through Thursday's session but today could come too soon for the skipper.

Nathan Benson is a recent departure after an impressive performance at Mangotsfield United last weekend, Benno has moved to Bedworth United and that'll leave a hole that will need filling.

Luke Carsley is another unlikely to feature, Luke is nursing a hamstring injury and it could be touch and go as to whether he features again this season.

One player likely to return to the squad today is Steve Webb. The experienced midfielder picked up an impact injury away at Shortwood United but again was another that got through training on Thursday.

Janes could be forced to call on a few former players once more to help The Plums this afternoon, certainly in the defensive ranks.

Another tricky week to get through for Pershore Town but if they reach anywhere near the levels produced at Mangotsfield United last weekend, then they'll be a positive result today at the Recruit 12 Community Stadium.

Harlie Price and Bailey Fuller both struck twice last weekend; taking their totals up to sixteen goals each for the season whilst James Baldwin also got on the scoresheet for his fifteenth.

Elsewhere, Joe Stockton and Cam Monteith have both been in fine form recently after coming in from Worcester City. Today's game could see Cam pushed into midfield following 'Bennos' departure, his favoured position.

Fingers will be crossed for a good crowd down at the Recruit 12 Community Stadium this afternoon, it is Non League Day after all! Hopefully the three points will be staying here with us in Worcestershire too.

"We come into this fixture on the back of a fantastic result at Mangotsfield." said Janes.

"The players were excellent on the day, when we have so many individuals close to the top of their game, a team performance of that magnitude is always possible.

"The result demonstrates the quality and ability this team have, the result probably frustrates me even more because we have not had enough of those performances this season, evidenced by our position in the league.

"Corsham visit us in good form, they beat us earlier on in the season in what was a really competitive game.

"Corsham are a very different side in relation to personnel, but what hasn't changed is the difficulty of this fixture. Both teams are looking to finish as high as they can, they will be as desperate to win as we are.

"The players trained well in the week and I felt we got out of the session our objectives leading into the game today.

"Our focus is always around what we can do to hurt the opposition and to win the game, but also understanding how they will look to hurt us and how we can stop that.

"The players will need to execute our approach to a high level and their understanding of the game will be essential.

"We will prepare them as best as we can and manage the game, but they are the ones that are in control once they cross that white line."
