Match Preview; Coton Green

Match Preview; Coton Green

Club Admin17 May 2023 - 13:32

We try again this evening with this one; Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup Semi Final at the AIM Community Stadium.

With the previous attempt called off due to a waterlogged pitch, there is nothing forecast to suggest tonight's game is in any jeopardy.

A game that could yet prove to be Danny Janes' last game in charge, albeit certainly his last home game in charge at Pershore Town.

There is definitely hope that The Plums will have one more game to play following tonight's fixture - the final. Coton Green however will fully expect to progress themselves and we should be set for a good game of football at the mid-way point of May.

Nic Oakley's Midland Football League side having just returned to Step 6 for the 2022/23 season finished 9th in Midland League Division One.

Oakley will again likely look to the experience of Luke Fox, Matt Gardner and Joe Smith to guide his side through this evening's Semi Final.

Matt Gardner will have the added pressure of finding the back of the net, that's something he's managed to do throughout his career at every club and certainly this season has been no different with twenty six goals to his name.

A win over Redditch Borough in the first round followed by an impressive 1 - 0 win away against Step 5's Stourport Swifts saw Coton Green into the Quarter Final of the Smedley Crooke Cup.

It was then the Quarter Final that had Dudley Town pull out of the competition paving the way for Nic Oakley's side to take their place in tonight's Semi Final.

Meanwhile, as holder of the Smedley Crooke Cup, Danny Janes' side remain the only team left in the competition to have featured in every round having beaten Warstones Wanderers, Hampton and Womborne Allstars along the way to the Semi Final.

Coton Green will prove the toughest test for Danny Janes side in being the highest ranked team the club have faced in this season's competition.

Harry Burns is expected to return to the squad having been cup tied for the Challenge Cup Final and whilst Eddie Cox is away, they'll be a change between the sticks.

"We are the holders of the Smedley Crooke Cup and we want to hold onto it as long as we can." said Janes

"Coton Green have had a great season after their promotion, establishing themselves at Step 6 and competing really well.

"I am looking forward to a really competitive game and if we are to progress, the players will need to be at their best.

"I can assure you no players are ready for the season to finish just yet, we are desperate to reach another final."
