Match Preview; Lye Town

Match Preview; Lye Town

Club Admin26 May 2023 - 16:29

The Plums will round off the season tomorrow afternoon with a trip to Redditch United for the Smedley Crooke Cup Final.

Danny Janes' side will take on Midland Football League side, Lye Town, in the final of the Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup at Redditch United's Trico Stadium to conclude both sides 2022/23 season.

A season that will no doubt have begun for both sides back in June 2022 will finally come to an end as we find out the winners of the 2022/23 Smedley Crooke Cup.

Both sides had impressive league campaigns, both securing promotions in their respective leagues. Lye Town will begin life next season in Step Four having finished Runners-Up in Midland Football League Premier Division and winning their Play-Off fixture, 6 - 1.

Since that game, they've beaten both New Dales Vale and Fairfield Villa to progress into the final of the Smedley Crooke Cup whilst also beating Inkberrow back in March in the Second Round.

In Joe Palmer and Josh Hesson, Lye Town have two of their league stop goal-scorers with a combined total of over fifty goals between them this season. Ben Billingham will be another to keep an eye on, he alone has found the back of the net fifth-teen times this season from midfield.

Defensively, Sam Hall and Jamie Ashmore will be two to look out for. In Ashmore in-particular, they have a player with fantastic distribution and an incredible amount of experience.

As for The Plums going into this one, it's a chance to try and retain the Smedley Crooke Cup having beaten Malvern Town 1 - 0 in the final last season whilst also looking to secure a treble having won the Hellenic League Division One title and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup.

Danny Janes' side have had to compete in every round of this season's competition, beating Warstones Wanderers, Hampton, Wombourne All Stars and Coton Green to reach the final.

Whilst they'll be changes to The Plums squad due to holidays, Janes is still hopeful that his side can cause one more upset on his last game in charge of Pershore Town.

That said, whilst it is the last game for Janes and the majority of his management team, the young manager is still keep to stay focused on the job in hand.

"It is the last dance, one that will be emotional and very significant to myself and the management team." said Janes.

"As much as I would like to say we will enjoy the occasion, it will be hard too. Our full focus is on the game, when you want to win as much as we do, you forget everything around you and focus on decision making and analysis.

"It will not be until after the game that reality will set in, we have a job to do and Lye Town are going to make things very difficult for us.

"The players trained well in the week; they now need to deliver one final performance at a very high level.

"If we have enough of them at that level, then we have a chance, if not, Lye Town have the quality to punish us and make us suffer."
